February 22, 2010 10:28![]() Prof. Stephen Baenziger holds Eugene W. Price Distinguished Professor position at the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, University of Nebraska, Lincoln. His professional carrier has been devoted to small grains, wheat breeding and wheat improvement research and covers a range of topics. He supervised more than 20 graduate students including five from Turkey. Prof. S. Baenziger served as a President of Crop Science Society of America and holds a number of prestigious national and international awards. He visited IWWIP from February 8 to 10 with the objective of learning about the program and discussing potential cooperation in the future. Within the framework of the trip he visited Anatolian Agric. Research Inst. (Eskisehir), Central Field Crop Research Inst. (Ankara) and Bahri Dagdas International Agric. Research Inst. (Konya). Presentations were made at each institute and discussions were held on breeding priorities and future cooperation. The strong area of the breeding program at UNL is winter hardiness and Stem Rust Resistance which is very complimentary with the strong Yellow Rust resistance in IWWIP germplasm. Several cooperative activities has been initiated already like exchange of segregating populations, trial of US and Turkish varieties as well as evaluation of historical changes in cold tolerance. |
